To Honor Your Mother and Father…

You Can Do It!

If you’re anything like me, you had parents who neglected you – mistreated you – and made you feel worthless as a child. When I became an adult, my anger toward my mother was fierce. Not so much with my father. He was never around so I had no time to be angry with him. But my mother had a responsibility to me and my sister. We needed her to love us. I was angry – and I hated her.

When I started my walk with Christ, I had a hard time living up to my fullest potential as a Christian. (I’m not suggesting that reaching our fullest potential as a Christian is easy, but it’s a lot harder when we live with hatred in our heart toward others). I was self-righteous and I felt my mother was nothing more than a sinner who God was angry with for the way she treated me.

I was wrong. God loved me. God loved her too.

It is such a liberating feeling when we stop walking around in self-pity mode every day – and start living in victory mode with Jesus Christ. Through continued prayer, and studying of the Bible, I knew I had to honor my mother – no matter how she treated me. I knew the only way to live as a true disciple for Jesus Christ, was to honor my mother, as the Word of God says.

It was hard. She betrayed me.

So how did I begin to show honor to my mother?

I started to love her. God showed me how my thoughts were solely on myself. I was not looking at it on a bigger scale. My mother did not show love to me – because she was never shown true love herself. How can a person give you something they do not have? If you ask your friend to borrow $100, they cannot give it to you if they do not have it. It’s the same with love.

We have to receive love – in order to give love.

We expect our parents to be loving. But it’s unfair to expect something from someone who has no ability to give, what you’re asking for.

I started to love my mother even though it was hard. I started to call her more often. I started to visit her more often. I started to pray for her every day. And guess what? Her heart began to soften, and our relationship grew stronger.

Honor your earthly parents – even when it’s hard. God will bless you. You will live in freedom. You will live in peace. You will begin to have joy. It won’t be easy – but it can be done with the help of Jesus Christ.

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. “
